The snowstorm that hit New York City yesterday was a major inconvenience for many travelers trying to leave from LaGuardia International Airport. Nearly every flight at the Queens airport was canceled — 99% of them, according to the Port Authority. Residual delays could last until Thursday March 16, 2017. Now that LGA is back open, there is another issue travelers will have to deal with: the traffic getting to and from the airport. Travelers are being warned of heavy traffic Wednesday March 15, 2017 in and around the major area airports as thousands of passengers stranded by Tuesday’s storm try to fly out. A post-storm travel day usually creates jams at area airports, particularly at LaGuardia, which is in the first year of a 10-year reconstruction project that requires periodic changes in the configuration of on-airport roadways. When 10 inches of snow dropped on LaGuardia on February 9, 2017, for example, the airport was overwhelmed with passengers and auto traffic the following day. Video and photographs from that day showed traffic backed up onto the adjacent Grand Central Parkway and taxi and car passengers getting out of vehicles and walking on the parkway toward the airport.
